Signs, Causes, and When to Call a Pro
It’s normal for pools to lose a little water to evaporation, especially during hot Southern California days. But if your pool is dropping more than 1/4 to 1/2 inch of water in 24 hours, a hidden leak could be the culprit. Here’s how to tell, and what to do.
Pool Leak Detection: The Bucket Test
The bucket test is an easy DIY method to rule out evaporation. Fill a bucket about ¾ full of pool water. Set the bucket on a pool step (or secure it so it stays at water level). Mark the water level inside the bucket, and mark the pool water level on the outside of the bucket. After 24 hours with no rain or swimming, compare the levels. If the pool’s water level drops more than the water inside the bucket, you may have a leak.
Other Warning Signs of a Leak
Beyond water loss, there are a few telltale signs that point to a possible leak. You might notice wet or unusually soft patches in your yard near the pool, loose tiles, shifting coping, or cracks forming around the deck. The pool pump might start losing prime, or you could see air bubbles coming through the return lines. Any of these could indicate water escaping where it shouldn’t.
What Causes Pool Leaks?
Pool leaks can result from worn-out seals around lights or skimmers, cracked underground pipes, equipment issues, or even structural damage to the pool itself. Sometimes, settling soil or poor drainage can lead to cracks or separation over time, creating paths for water to escape.
